Edith was born in 1898 in Horley, Surrey, England. Edith's father was Thomas Kenward and her mother was Susannah Maynard. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Kenward and Amelia Daniels. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Percival, Frederick, George, Susannah, Amelia, Lizzie and Clara. She is the second youngest of the ten children.
