Thos was born in 1852 in Shoreditch, Middlesex, England. Thos' father was Benjamin Kenward and his mother was Jane Gorringe. His paternal grandparents were Josiah Kenward and Ann Bashford. He had four brothers and a sister, named Abraham, Robert, Joseph, Henry and Annie. He is the third youngest of the six children.
