Henry was born in 1857 in Shoreditch, Middlesex, England. Henry's father was Benjamin Kenward and his mother was Jane Gorringe. His paternal grandparents were Josiah Kenward and Ann Bashford. He had four brothers and a sister, named Abraham, Robert, Joseph, Thos and Annie. He is the second youngest of the six children.
