Thomas was born in 1889 in Copthorne, Sussex, England. Thomas' father was Josiah Daniels and his mother is Elizabeth Payne. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Daniels and Ellen Kenward. He had five brothers and three sisters, named George, Josiah, James, Albert, William, Mary, Ellen and Rose. He is the fourth youngest of the nine children.
