James was born in 1881 in Worth, Sussex, England. James' father was Josiah Daniels and his mother is Elizabeth Payne. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Daniels and Ellen Kenward. He had five brothers and three sisters, named George, Josiah, Thomas, Albert, William, Mary, Ellen and Rose. He is the third oldest of the nine children.
