William was born in June 1857 in Lexden. William's father was Robert William Brunwin and his mother was Sarah Ann Miles. His paternal grandparents were John Brunwin and Hannah Wade. He had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Wilfred, James, Herbert, Frederick, Barnard Robert, Miles Harry, Horace, Connie, Hilda, Margaret Hannah, Octavia, Elizabeth Mary, Bertha Miles and Martha. He was the fifth oldest of the fifteen children. He died at the age of 17 in 1874.
