Leolin was born in 1851 in Cowden, Kent, England. Leolin's father was John Longley and his mother was Esther Kenward. His maternal grandparents were Josiah Kenward and Ann Bashford. He had five brothers named John, Henry, Edgar, Spencer and Charles. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 66 in September 1917 in Epsom, Surrey, England.
