Ernest was born in 1882 in Carlshalton, Surrey, England. Ernest's father was Spencer Longley and his mother was Ann Austen. His paternal grandparents were John Longley and Esther Kenward. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Spencer, Percy, Milicent and Beatrice. He was the youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 84 in 1966 in Surrey Southeastern, England.
