At the time of the outbreak of war the HOVE
POLICE FORCE numbered seventy-one, and of these
twenty-nine, of whom seven were reservists, enlisted
in His Majesty's forces. How well they played
their parts on the various battle-fronts is shown in
the fact that four of them, P.C's Thomas Bates,
William Brunwin, Henry J. Baker and Charles
Webb won the Military Medal ; nine were
wounded, and three made the supreme sacrifice,
P.C's William Charles Corps, Albert John Laker
and Ernest John White. There cannot be many
groups so small in number and proceeding from a
single civic centre that can show a finer record.
