James was born on March 9th, 1854 in Merthyr, Trdgr, Wales.¹ James' father was John ROBERTS and his mother was Adelaide FORD. His paternal grandparents were John ROBERTS (1785) and Mary DARCY (1795); his maternal grandparents were James FORD (1799) and Sarah SCHOFIELD (CHR-1803). He had six brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Joseph Moroni, Hyrum, David, Edwin Tearle, Mary, Jane, Emily and Elizabeth Lillian. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 72 on September 29th, 1926 in Bountiful, Davis, Ut. He was buried on October 2nd, 1926 in Lehi, Utah, Ut.¹¹
